We are going to take a look at where this perception came about. I am also going to share my story on how people close to me treated my family differently due to our qualifications.

Where Did This Warped Perception Come From…
The perception that college degrees are essential for success comes from a combination of historical and cultural factors.
During the Industrial Revolution era, there was a demand for higher education. Over time, college degrees became associated with social status, professional advancement, and economic prosperity.
This perception was further reinforced by media portrayals and societal expectations, often depicting college graduates as more intelligent, successful, and desirable.
As a result, this leads to biases, and it could be seen in some subtle ways. It influenced employment opportunities, social interactions, and even personal self-esteem.
The notion that a college degree is the determining factor of an individual’s worth is not only inaccurate but also deeply harmful, creating unnecessary barriers and isolation among people.
I would like to share my story on how certain family members saw degrees and qualifications of mine and my wife.
My Story Of How My Qualifications Were Viewed By Others…
I qualified as a pharmacist. My wife, she studied to become a Therapeutic Aromatherapist and Reflexologist
She did not get a degree, but rather a certificate but it was a profession where she got a practice number and could claim consultations from medical aid or medical insurance.
Anyway at the time, certain family members did not regard her qualifications as important. They said and implied some very hurtful things. Some of them felt, that she just married me “because of my profession.”
Others told my wife straight out, “I don’t believe in your work, I think that it’s just a load of rubbish.” And this was from a lady whose husband is a doctor, yet she does not work a signal day in her life!
So, it’s safe to say that there are people who can be close to you, who will look down on you if you do not have a degree.
The story gets even more interesting…
When my hearing health suffered, I struggled to perform my duties at the pharmacy. At that point, I had no choice but to take a salary cut. As a result, I was not doing too well on the earning side of things.
Many family members and friends saw my wife and I as complete losers.
I had to wear a hearing aid to perform my everyday tasks. In this phase of my life, I struggled to hear their insults. They always dished it out to my wife. They took advantage and did it when I was not within reach to hear anything. And since I was no longer the high earner, I was looked down upon as well.
