How Many Categories Should a Blog Have?
There is no definite answer as to how many categories your blog should have. The truth is that it depends on the content that you create for your readers.
For instance, let’s say that your blog is focused on the home decor niche. Within this niche, there are so many categories that you branch into.
You can talk about vintage home decor, modern home decor, beach home decor, bohemian home decor, etc.
The number of categories that your blog has depends on the different subject areas that you talk about on your blog.
When you file your blog post under a certain category, it makes it easier for readers to find more content related to a certain topic. That means they stay on your site longer, and it’s good for your site in terms of SEO.
I am also going to show you how to find unique categories for your particular blog so that you can beat the competition, and get good site rankings.

What Is The Purpose of Having Categories On Your Blog?
When you first start your blog, you probably will have no categories at all. However, as you add more and more content to your blog, you will find that you can start assigning a blog post or a page to a specific category.
And this helps your online business in a number of ways.
The first way is that it allows your reader to easily navigate through your website. For instance, on this site, I have a number of categories.
I have a Blogging category, an Amazon Fba category, and Affiliate Marketing Education category to name a few. So, it makes it easier for the reader to learn more by visiting their category of choice.
When you have a number of posts or articles grouped together in a specific category, it also shows that you are an authority on the subject.
If you write about specific topics, and do the correct keyword search, then you can tap into an audience that other established blogs(your competitors) have failed to capitalize on.
(Don’t worry, I am going to show you how to find unique categories for your specific niche shortly)
From my research, I learned that having categories makes it easier for search engines to crawl your site and index your content. In other words, it is good SEO practice.

How to Find Unique Categories To Outrank Your Competition?
As I mentioned earlier, there are bound to be high authority sites based on your niche already occupying top spots on the search engines.
But this should not stop you at all from getting your share of online success.
Let me show you how you can tap into unique categories that you can build your site around and become an authority.
I am going to head over to Wealthy Affiliate. This is where I started my online business.
They have a “Niche Finder Tool.” I am going to show you how I use this tool to find some awesome categories to incorporate into a blog.
Let’s say that your niche or target audience for your website is “basketball.” Now that is too broad, and let’s go ahead and narrow it down a bit.
I use the niche finder tool to investigate more specific categories. Here are the results that I got:
You can see how many topics there are to talk about when it comes to basketball. All of the above can be categories.
But let’s dive deeper.
Let’s choose “basketball shoes and apparel,” from the search result above and see what we get.
Take a look at the next image.
Now here is where the magic happens. I am going to take the first category which is men’s basketball shoes and use a tool to find topics that I can write about in my blog.
Take a look at some of the results that I got.
All of the terms that I highlighted above are “keywords” that people ACTUALLY type into Google. You can write a blog post on each and every term above.
This is just for ONE category.
Can you see how much opportunity there is? Even if there are high-ranking authority sites, you still can write content that will get ranked and you will get people visiting your business.
By the way, the tools that I used are both available at the Wealthy Affiliate training university. If you want you can join them for FREE and test out their starter membership.

Conclusion – How Many Categories Should A Blog Have?
In my opinion, it depends on the overall content that you have or is going to be added to your blog. The more you cover different areas related to your niche, the more categories you will have.
There is no set number to how many categories your blog needs to have.
The main idea is to cover a category in as much detail as you can before you move on to the next category. If you can, try to talk about a specific category in 20 or 30 articles.
I know from personal experience that it can get tiresome to cover one subject over and over again. If you do get to this point, then take a break and write about another category and then come back to the original one later.
You do not have to have many categories on your blog.
The key is to provide as much HELPFUL information as you can. If you can do that, then in time readers will see you as an authority in your niche, and your blog will start getting good rankings.
At that point, you can decide on a number of ways to monetize your blog.
I hope that you found this article helpful.
